Indrayani Nagar Becomes Garbage Dump: Despite the efforts of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to clean up the city by removing dustbins and imposing fines on citizens, garbage is being dumped on public places. Indrayani Nagar in Bhosari has become a prime example of this, where huge heaps of garbage are piling up, spreading foul smell and posing serious health risks to both residents and stray animals. Waste is being dumped in many areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad even after municipal officials have removed garbage collection points to avoid garbage dumping. Efforts were made to maintain cleanliness by replacing garbage dumping spots with decorative flower pots. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, the PCMC health department launched beautification projects to convert urban garbage dumps into landscaped areas to reduce environmental hazards and improve cleanliness. Such efforts contribute to sustainable development and an eco-friendly, health-conscious urban space.
Yet garbage dumping continues at many places across the city. Residents often dispose of waste irresponsibly even after garbage collection trucks come regularly. Surprisingly, even well-educated individuals travelling in luxury vehicles are seen throwing garbage on the streets. Stray cattle and animals are feeding on plastic waste scattered on the streets. Despite the government’s ban on plastic carry bags, huge piles of plastic bags are seen on major routes, highlighting enforcement challenges.
The PCMC’s health department has employed several contractors for street cleaning and household waste collection, disbursing lakhs of rupees every month for these services. However, the cleanliness remains a persistent problem, and the contractors’ negligence is evident.
