Red Alert in Pune & Konkan: Yellow Alert for Mumbai as Monsoon Unleashes Heavy Rains

Red Alert in Pune & Konkan: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for Pune and the Konkan region, including Raigad and Ratnagiri, as heavy to extremely heavy rainfall lashes parts of Maharashtra. Mumbai and Thane remain under a yellow alert, with consistent downpours expected to intensify in the coming hours. (Red Alert in Pune & Konkan)

Mumbai has already witnessed its wettest May in over a century, recording 295mm of rainfall and breaking the previous record of 279.4mm set in 1918. The early arrival of the southwest monsoon has disrupted daily life, with waterlogging and traffic slowdowns reported across major roads and railways.

In Pune, torrential rains continue to batter the city. Authorities have started releasing water from the Khadakwasla dam, raising concerns about possible flooding in low-lying areas. Disaster response teams from the NDRF are on alert, and local officials are coordinating rescue and safety measures.

The IMD has also placed Satara and Nashik under an orange alert, while Kolhapur and Aurangabad are under yellow. Officials have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors where possible, and follow updates from reliable weather sources. The state administration is monitoring the situation round-the-clock and has prepared emergency services to respond swiftly if needed. Schools in some regions may shut temporarily depending on how the situation evolves.

With rainfall likely to continue over the next 48 hours, residents must remain cautious. Authorities have advised people living in flood-prone zones to stay prepared and follow all safety instructions. As Maharashtra enters a phase of heavy monsoon activity, timely action, awareness, and cooperation will be key to staying safe.
