Pune: A local court in Pune has sentenced a coach to three years of imprisonment after he was found guilty of molesting a minor girl at the Balewadi Shooting Academy. The incident dates back to 2013 when the survivor, a teenage trainee at the academy, accused the coach of inappropriate physical contact during training sessions. (Pune)
After the FIR was lodged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the police carried out a thorough investigation. The court found enough evidence to convict the coach under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as relevant sections of the POCSO Act.
The case had remained in trial for several years due to procedural delays, but the victim and her family pursued it consistently. The judgment finally came in June 2025, with the court stating that the safety of children in training institutions is of utmost priority and that such cases must set an example.

The court also emphasized the need for stricter background checks and supervision mechanisms at sports academies, especially those involving minors. Authorities at the Balewadi Sports Complex have reportedly increased internal monitoring after the case came to light.
This verdict has sparked discussions across Pune’s sports community about safeguarding measures and the importance of a secure environment for young athletes. Parents and guardians are now demanding better oversight, regular audits, and sensitization programs for all coaching staff.
The victim, who has since moved on from shooting, expressed relief at the judgment. Her family stated they hope this justice will empower other young girls to speak up without fear.
