Vaishnavi, who had been married for less than two years, reportedly faced continuous harassment from her husband Shashank Hagawane, mother-in-law Lata Hagawane, and sister-in-law Karishma Hagawane. The abuse was allegedly linked to dowry demands and disputes over a substantial amount of gold, about 51 kg in her name, that was pledged to banks. Authorities are investigating the financial dealings and how the money raised from the gold was utilized. Following the revelations, the Pune court has extended the police custody of Shashank, Lata, and Karishma Hagawane until May 28. The police suspect systematic mental and physical torture over several months, turning the case into a severe instance of domestic violence and dowry-related crime.

Adding to the tension, Nilesh Chavan, a political associate of the Hagawane family and allegedly involved in threatening Vaishnavi’s father during a dispute over her infant son, is currently absconding. A lookout notice has been issued for his arrest. The case has attracted widespread political and public attention. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule has strongly condemned the incident, demanding swift and strict action against all accused.
