HSRP Installation at Home: In a move to accelerate the adoption of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), the Maharashtra Transport Department has announced that no additional home fitment charges will be applied when installing HSRPs for 25 or more vehicles at a single location. The directive comes as the department reviews the slow progress of HSRP installations for vehicles registered before April 1, 2019.

Since January 1, 2025, three agencies have been authorized to install HSRPs on older vehicles across Maharashtra, but implementation has been lagging significantly. “We’ve received numerous complaints about the limited number of fitment centers in some districts and difficulties in scheduling appointments,” said Shailesh Kamat, Joint Transport Commissioner, Maharashtra State, Mumbai.
To address these challenges, Regional and Deputy Regional Transport Officers have been instructed to review existing fitment centers in their jurisdictions and direct agencies to establish additional centers where needed. Motor Vehicle Inspectors will inspect these centers before granting operational permissions.

The department also highlighted that vehicle dealers are mandated to install HSRPs on all vehicles registered after April 1, 2019, before delivery to customers. However, complaints have been received about dealers delivering vehicles without HSRPs, prompting warnings of appropriate action under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
Transport officials have been directed to meet with bus, auto-rickshaw, taxi, and truck associations to encourage HSRP adoption among their members. The new incentive allows groups of 25 or more two-wheelers, four-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, taxis, buses, or trucks to receive HSRP installations at convenient locations, including housing societies, without any additional home fitment charges.
The department has instructed local offices to publicize this initiative through local newspapers to increase awareness and compliance.
