Vendor Imran noted that the litchi season began approximately 15 days ago and is expected to continue for another fortnight. “The fresh lot of litchis has now started arriving from Bihar, while the earlier supplies from Kolkata have completely stopped,” he said.

Despite the abundant supply, vendors are facing financial setbacks. “Earlier, we sold 10 kg boxes for ₹2,500 to ₹3,000. Now, due to the rain, the same box sells for only ₹1,000,” Imran added. The fruit, which typically commands high demand during the summer, is now being retailed at ₹200 per kilogram.
Litchis generally have a short market window, and this year’s Unseasonal rains have further compressed it. With just a couple of weeks left in the season, vendors are encouraging customers to enjoy the fruit while it lasts. As litchis continue to brighten up the Market Yard with their color and flavor, the hope remains that buyers will take advantage of the lower prices before the fruit disappears from the stalls for another year.
