Demolished Bridge in Pune Leaves Behind Persistent Noise in Riverbed

Demolished Bridge in Pune Leaves Behind Persistent Noise in Riverbed: Pune’s recent rainfall not only raised river levels but also stirred an unusual mystery in the city’s Erandwane area. Even after authorities demolished the old low-lying bridge across the Mutha River’s dry bed near S.M. Joshi Bridge, residents continued to hear persistent, echoing noises from the riverbed sparking confusion and concern. (Demolished Bridge in Pune Leaves Behind Persistent Noise in Riverbed)

Construction crews had demolished the aging structure to make way for new flood-resilient infrastructure, especially with the rising threat of water surges during the monsoon. The operation involved dismantling cement blocks, clearing support columns, and flattening surrounding debris. Yet, the loud sounds resembling thuds and clinks didn’t fade even days after the demolition ended.

Locals first reported the phenomenon during late-night hours. Many assumed it was leftover machinery or workers conducting repairs. But repeated inspections confirmed no ongoing construction activity in the riverbed. The sounds continued at irregular intervals, baffling both residents and civic staff.

Some environmental experts suspect that the demolition unsettled underground cavities or stone structures that are now collapsing slowly under the weight of soaked soil. Others believe leftover metal debris might be shifting with the current or wind, causing the echoing noise. The mystery has triggered interest among local engineers and geologists who are investigating the riverbed’s post-demolition behavior.

PMC officials have stationed monitoring teams near the site to keep a close eye on noise activity. They also plan to conduct a structural sound survey and geo-analysis to understand what’s causing the persistent sound patterns. In the meantime, residents have been advised to stay away from the area after dark due to safety concerns.

As the city braces for more rainfall, authorities aim to resolve the issue quickly to ensure both structural safety and public confidence. The strange sounds continue, but so does Pune’s determination to find answers.
