Cloudburst Hits Yamunotri Highway in Uttarakhand, Several Workers Missing

Cloudburst Hits Yamunotri Highway: Uttarakhand is receiving torrential rains since midnight on Saturday, triggering a massive cloudburst on the Yamunotri National Highway near Paligaad-Ojri-Dabarkot. The incident has left at least 8 to 9 laborers missing, with rescue operations currently underway. (Cloudburst Hits Yamunotri Highway)

According to officials, the cloudburst occurred around 12:00 AM between Paligaad and Dabarkot on the Yamunotri route. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with police and revenue department teams, were immediately deployed to the site for search and rescue operations.

Workers Feared Trapped or Swept Away
Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman confirmed that rescue operations are being conducted on a war footing. “Fifteen personnel are actively engaged in rescue work, but the operation is facing hurdles as machinery cannot reach the site. The missing laborers are either trapped under debris or swept away by floodwaters,” he said.

The cloudburst has also caused significant disruptions to traffic on the Yamunotri Highway, with several stretches completely washed away. The National Highway Authority is working to restore road connectivity. The road near Ojri has been severely damaged, cutting off access to nearby villages and causing considerable damage to agricultural lands.

Rising Water Levels and Structural Risk
Due to the incessant rains, water levels in the Yamuna River have surged, putting the Kupda Kunshala Trikhili Motor Bridge near Syanaity at risk. The weather department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for multiple districts in Uttarakhand.

As per the forecast, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Champawat, Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar are likely to experience heavy downpours until July 1. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
