Air India Ticket Prices Drop by 15% After Ahmedabad Crash; International Bookings Down by 20%

Air India Ticket Prices Drop: Following the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 on June 12, there has been a significant drop in both domestic and international flight bookings for the airline. According to Ravi Gosain, President of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), bookings have fallen by nearly 20% on international routes and around 10–12% on domestic routes. The crash, which occurred shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad to London, saw the aircraft collide with a hostel building of a medical college in Meghani Nagar, Ahmedabad. Of the 297 people who lost their lives, 241 were on board the aircraft and 56 were residents in and around the hostel building. This has been one of the deadliest air disasters in recent Indian aviation history.

The accident has directly impacted Air India’s fare structure. Average airfares have dropped by 8% to 15%. On international routes—especially to Europe and Southeast Asia—ticket prices have decreased by up to 15%, while domestic route fares have dropped by 8% to 12%, according to IATO data.

Despite repeated attempts, Air India has not issued an official statement regarding the fare drop or booking cancellations.

Ravi Gosain mentioned that a noticeable increase in cancellations has been observed, particularly among corporate clients and high-end holiday travelers. Many of them have shifted to alternate airlines due to safety concerns—even though regulatory authorities like DGCA have confirmed that there are no systemic safety issues with Air India’s fleet.

“This appears to be a temporary, sentiment-driven reaction,” said Gosain. “Booking trends are expected to normalize over the next few weeks, especially since no structural or regulatory non-compliance has been reported.”
