According to the information given by police, the adopted girl is 13 years old and is studying in class 8. She along with her two friends murdered her 54-year-old adoptive mother Rajalakshmi Kar. She was living in a rented house in Paralakhemundi town of Gajapati district on April 29. The minor girl committed this crime out of anger on her mother who was opposing her love affair. She also had a motive of gaining rights over the property. The accused minor girl first gave Rajlakshmi a sedative and then murdered her by pressing a pillow on her face. After this, Rajlakshmi was admitted to the hospital on the pretext of a heart attack, where the doctors declared her dead. The next day, Rajlakshmi’s body was cremated in Bhubaneswar in the presence of relatives. Rajlakshmi had a heart-related disease. Therefore, no one suspected murder initially.
No one suspected anything about it for two weeks after the funeral. However, Rajalakshmi’s brother Siba Prasad Mishra found the minor girl’s mobile phone and the crime was solved. When Siba Prasad checked the mobile phone, he found the girl’s chats with her friends on Instagram. In these chats, there was a mention of killing Rajalakshmi and looting the cash and gold from the house. After this, Siba Prasad filed a complaint at the police station in Paralakhemundi on May 14. The police investigated and arrested the minor girl, Ganesh Rath (21) and his friend Dinesh Sahu (20). According to the police, accused Ganesh Rath instigated the girl to kill her mother. He assured her that after Rajalakshmi was murdered, they could live together and use her property. On April 29, as per the plan of both the accused, the three of them killed Rajalakshmi.
Speaking to media, Gajapati Superintendent of Police Jatindra Kumar Panda said that Rajalakshmi and her husband found a girl on the side of the road in Bhubaneswar a few years ago. Since the couple did not have any children, they adopted the girl and brought her to their home. Rajalakshmi’s husband died within a year of adopting the girl. After that, Rajalakshmi raised the girl alone. So that the girl could study in a good school, they decided to rent a house in Paralakhemundi. However, in the meantime, the girl developed closeness with the two accused above. Rajalakshmi was strongly opposed to this. There were also fights between the two due to this reason.
