“If They Skip Third Language, Marathi Students in Maharashtra Will Fall Behind": Warns Education Department

“If They Skip Third Language, Marathi Students in Maharashtra Will Fall Behind”: Maharashtra’s Education Department has emphasized the crucial role of the third language in helping Marathi students stay competitive academically and culturally. Officials explained that dropping the third language could limit students’ future opportunities and isolate them from a broader knowledge base. In its recent statement, the department highlighted how learning an additional language typically Hindi, Sanskrit, or a foreign language boosts cognitive skills, enhances multilingual abilities, and improves overall communication. They warned that students who opt out of the third language risk limiting their career paths and losing connection to national literacy and heritage.

Education Minister stressed that apart from local and national relevance, third language competence opens doors to competitive exams, higher education, and public service roles across India. He added that multilingualism fosters cultural awareness an important skill in Maharashtra’s diverse society.

School principals welcomed the guidance. Many shared that adding a foreign or classical language enriched classroom dynamics and student engagement. One educator noted how Sanskrit classes sparked cultural curiosity, while foreign language modules improved critical thinking and global outlook.

Parents also expressed strong support. They mentioned that third language instruction helped their children converse fluently during family functions in different parts of the country. “My daughter now reads Marathi literature and enjoys simple conversations in Sanskrit too,” one parent shared.

Education officers have rolled out language-training workshops to prepare teachers teaching third languages. They supplied interactive learning resources, curated reading materials, audio–visual aids, and lesson plans featuring real-world topics. These tools aim to make third language classes lively and practical.

Schools must now integrate the third language into their curriculum, ensuring consistent instruction from grade one onward. The Department plans to monitor compliance through regular reviews, inspections, and feedback mechanisms as part of its quality assurance drive.

By mandating multilingual learning, Maharashtra aims to equip students for India’s multilingual reality and give Marathi children a strong foundation for future success. This proactive policy reflects the state’s commitment to a balanced, culturally grounded, and globally aware education system.
