Beware: The Person Next to You on the Train Might Be a Railway Official

Beware: Train journeys might seem like the perfect time to relax, talk freely, or even complain about services. But passengers should now think twice that friendly stranger sitting beside you could actually be a railway official on duty. (Beware)

To improve services and catch issues firsthand, Indian Railways has started deploying officials disguised as regular passengers on select trains. These undercover checks help them observe passenger behavior, staff performance, and onboard cleanliness without alerting anyone. The goal is to get an unfiltered view of daily travel realities something surveys and reports often miss.

These plain-clothed officials monitor how catering services function, whether RPF personnel are alert, and how clean the coaches remain throughout the journey. They also look at how TTEs and attendants behave and whether passengers follow basic etiquette like keeping the toilets clean or not blocking aisles with luggage.

Interestingly, officials are also tasked with keeping an eye on ticketless travel, overcharging by food vendors, and even how coach attendants respond to passenger requests. In some instances, they speak with passengers to understand their grievances and quietly note areas that need attention.

This initiative aims to create a safer and more efficient rail experience by identifying problems in real time. The presence of these hidden observers pushes staff to stay alert and gives genuine feedback to the railway department for improvement.

So the next time you’re on a train, remember your co-passenger may not be just a fellow traveler. They might be someone closely watching how the system runs. Indian Railways hopes this move will lead to more accountability and ultimately a better journey for every commuter.
