IND-PAK Tension: Air Traffic Over Maharashtra Increases As Pakistan Bans Airspace For India

IND-PAK Tension

IND-PAK Tension: Following India’s action, Pakistan also closed the airspace to Indian aircraft. As a result, flights from North India, especially from Delhi, Lucknow and Amritsar airports, to cities in North America, the Middle East, Europe and West Asia are now using the airspace of Maharashtra and to some extent, Gujarat. Everyday, around 200 to 250 aircrafts are using Maharashtra and Gujarat’s airspace to cross Arabian sea. India has started action on Pakistan following terrorist attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam. In response, Pakistan has closed its airspace for India. This has increased the flight duration of aircraft.

The flight duration has increased by one to two hours. Due to the increase in distance, aircraft fuel is being used more. However, Airlines have not increased the flight ticket prices have not been yet.

Indian planes used to use Pakistan’s airspace to fly to cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Sharjah, Turkey, Egypt, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, London, New York, Washington, Chicago, etc. Now that the airspace is closed, the airspace of Maharashtra, especially Mumbai, is being used. Due to this, the movement of planes has increased. Indian airlines have tried to keep the flights running by immediately rerouting. 10 to 12 air routes were being used from Pakistan. Due to their closure, airlines are having to resort to long-distance routes. Instead of Pakistan, flights are flying to Europe and North America via West Asia, crossing the Arabian Sea. Airlines are stopping in Vienna, Copenhagen or Abu Dhabi to refuel or change crews on their way to Europe and North America.
