No New GBS Cases in Pune; Hospitals Urged to Accept Patients Under MJPJAY

New GBS Cases in Pune

New GBS Cases in Pune: Pune Divisional Commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar has urged hospitals not to turn away patients suffering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) due to high treatment costs. He assured that patients will receive financial aid under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) scheme.

The Maharashtra government has introduced an enhanced medical package under MJPJAY to support GBS patients requiring intensive care, including ventilator support. During a meeting with hospital authorities, Pulkundwar emphasized the importance of ensuring accessible treatment without imposing a heavy financial burden on patients.

Pulkundwar confirmed that no new GBS cases have been reported and that surveillance measures have been intensified to monitor the situation.

GBS is a rare but severe neurological disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks peripheral nerves, causing muscle weakness and paralysis. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing complications through procedures such as plasma exchange (plasmapheresis) to reduce nerve damage and intravenous immunoglobulin therapy to introduce healthy antibodies into the body.

According to the Maharashtra health department, a total of 111 suspected GBS cases have been reported, including one fatality. Among them, 31 cases have been confirmed.

The breakdown of confirmed cases is as follows:
20 patients within Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits
66 from newly merged villages in the PMC area
12 under Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)
5 from Pune rural areas
8 from other districts
Currently, 13 patients are on ventilator support.

Additionally, 57 stool samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for enteric virus panel testing. Results revealed that 17 samples tested positive for Norovirus, while five samples contained Campylobacter bacteria. Meanwhile, out of 110 water samples tested for contamination, eight sources were found to be unsafe for consumption.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge hospitals to cooperate in providing necessary care for affected patients. (New GBS Cases in Pune)
