This year, January has deviated from the usual winter pattern, with temperatures soaring even before the official summer season begins. Private weather experts predict that this could be one of the hottest month in recent history. According to IMD scientist SD Sanap, the unusual heat in Maharashtra and central India is being caused by an anticyclonic circulation. This atmospheric system is causing air to descend from the lower to mid-troposphere levels, resulting in higher temperatures both during the day and night.

Sanap stated, “This circulation is likely to persist for the next three to four days, keeping temperatures elevated. After that, we expect a drop in both minimum and maximum temperatures.”

The heatwave is not limited to Pune alone. Other areas of Maharashtra have also recorded above-average temperatures. In Mumbai’s Santa Cruz, the maximum temperature reached 34.5°C, which is 4°C higher than normal, while in Ratnagiri, temperatures peaked at 36.1°C, 4.9°C above average. Pune’s maximum temperature was 34.6°C, which is 4.2°C higher than usual, and the minimum temperature in Lohgaon was recorded at 17.7°C, which is 6.6°C above normal. However, a dip in temperatures is expected by the end of this week. (Pune Weather News)
