Pune : JM Road Pothole : A 10-foot deep pothole has appeared on Jangali Maharaj Road (JM Road), renowned for its pristine condition. This incident, unprecedented in the road’s 49-year history, has raised serious concerns about road maintenance and infrastructure reliability in the city.
Long celebrated as a model for road maintenance, Jangali Maharaj Road’s smooth surface was a point of pride for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). However, the sudden appearance of this significant pothole near a rainwater chamber shocked both citizens and officials.
The pothole, discovered during a routine inspection, revealed a significant void beneath the road surface, posing a grave danger to motorists. MNS leader Prashant Kanojia promptly alerted the PMC Road Department, which immediately initiated repairs to minimize traffic disruption. Given the high-speed traffic on this crucial route, the pothole presented a serious safety hazard. However, swift action by the PMC averted a potential disaster.

Investigations revealed that the pothole stemmed from poor construction work around the rainwater chamber. Despite a ban on digging on Jangali Maharaj Road, inadequate chamber construction led to a hollow space beneath the road surface.
The road department undertook phased repairs to minimize traffic disruption while ensuring the road’s structural integrity. This incident, however, underscores broader issues with Pune’s road maintenance. Last year’s heavy rains caused significant flooding on major roads, including Jangali Maharaj Road and Gopalkrishna Gokhale Road, drawing criticism from citizens despite the city’s “Smart City” investments.
Citizens expressed dissatisfaction with the PMC’s response despite significant investments in the Smart City project. To address these concerns, the Sewage Department has launched a ₹5 crore project to enhance the capacity of monsoon drains in the affected areas.
Aniruddha Pawaskar, Head of the PMC Road Department, confirmed that repairs were promptly undertaken with minimal traffic disruption. He assured that the road is now safe for use.
